Tomato heaven

The next time Todd tells me he doesn't think my roma tomatoes are going to do anything, I'm going to point him to this picture. A half bushel basket filled with red romas. Off of 4 plants!

With probably 3 times this many green romas on those 4 plants!

32 more roma tomato plants to pick off of (or is it 28 plants yet to pick off of? Either way.....a heck of a lot of tomato sauce and ketchup will be coming my way this weekend) :)

I do have a question for all of you gardening guru's though: there are some black spots on a few of the roma tomatoes - is that the "blight" that is creeping around? Should I pick all the green romas to ripen inside? Or wait and see if they get black spots? Out of that half bushel basket that I picked, I had maybe a dozen tomatoes that I threw out due to black spots......

I'm no 'gardening guru' but what do the spots look like? I've got some weird spots on mine and other strangeness going on. It might be helpful to post pictures of the spots so those who have seen 'the blight' can comment if it's the same thing.

Your tomatoes look great! There is nothing as good as a home-grown tomato!

I'm not a gardening guru, but I love homegrown tomatoes. They're like candy. Hope you don't lose too many to the black spots.

I hope you remembered to give the bad tomatoes to your chickens!

I forgot to respond to the black spots. This year I too have noticed bad spots but they are only on a few tomatoes so I have been letting them ripen on the plant; you just can't beat vine ripe tomatoes!

Is the black spot on the end of the tomato? If it is then it could be Blossom End Rot. We had that problem one year. I asked everyone I knew and was finally told that it was something missing from the soil.

It is caused by a lack of calcium in the soil. I do not remember what we purchased for the problem but I do remember that it was easy to fix.

We have a few tomatoeplants this year, but once they ripen, they get eaten by the kids...;-) I have a few outdoorplants, but think it is probalby too cold, and too short a summer here to get much on them. There are fruits, but still very green...

Not much of a garden guru. So no help with the spots. I wish my tomatoes were being so productive. They've just started to come on. And I have peppers coming out my ears. Would really love to be able to make salsa.

I don't know about the black spots, but they sure do look yummy! Romas are the best!

You're so lucky, I lost all my plants to blight this year. The stalks and fruits were spotted. I had to pull all 24 plants up and discard of them, blight is bad news and will spread to all your other plants in your garden. You could verify what your spots are by taking a sample to your local nursery. Your fruit looks good in the picture, if you make sauces, I do hope you'll share your great works with all of us.

Oh I am so jealous! I so love tomatoes, fresh from the garden add salt! I hope you got a lof of canning done over the weekend.
Your son is so cute wanting to go to school so badly. Now just remind him of this in middle and high school when he isn't wanting to get up so early in the morning!

If the spots are on an otherwise healthy looking tomato, they could be from hail damage. We have lots like that this year, but they taste just fine!

Great crop!

If not for blogging, I would not have heard about a tomato blight this year. No evidence of that being a problem in our area from all the tomatoes I've seen at the Farmers Market. Hope someone can give you an answer and it's something simple. In the meantime, definitely nice haul! Homemade tomato sauce and ketchup sounds yummy!
