20 - 21 weeks

Some of the chickens (the Barred Rocks and Silver Laced Wyandots) were 21 weeks old yesterday. The Rhode Island Reds were 20 weeks old yesterday. And the Jersey Giants and Astralorp were 16 weeks old.
And we FINALLY got our first egg today:

A little small, but....some "biddy" out there is stepping up to the plate! I don't know which hen laid this (for obvious reasons) but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Jersey Giant or the Aracana. The hatchery told me the Jersey Giants it could take them 30 weeks to start laying.
Hopefully the rest will kick into egg production within the next few weeks. We've got a lamp out there on a timer (at the hatchery's suggestion) to trick them into thinking there is more daylight than there really is.
Now as long as I can convince Tyler he cannot sell just his one egg......

Awesome! Hey, this is just the beginning. Hope you'll post the larger eggs, too, when they "come in." I'm curious as to a size comparison from what I only have now which is store bought. Cool!

farm fresh eggs, that must be so good.....you have to start somewhere, so one egg is better than no eggs at all.

Its a beautiful egg. Is it dorky to think an egg is beautiful?

Any of the hens looking broody??

Thanks all! It is a beautiful egg (at least we think so) and we are so thrilled the chickens have started laying. As for cooking/tasting it - Todd and I are letting Tyler and Jessie have the first two cooked however they want. It's about 1/2 the size of a "normal" brown egg - at least the ones I get from our Amish neighbor.

mmmmm...fresh eggs!!!! We have several chickens and I have one hen that will not lay! She never has. Hubby threatens to eat her but I tease and tell him that she is just going through menopause!!!!

I just found your blog... I have to say I am jealous - I really wish I could have 20 acres for my gardens, animals, and family!!! Maybe someday! I was just successful in getting our town to change the ordinances so residents can keep hens - now I have 10 pullets in my back yard! I can't wait until I get my first egg!!!!

Have you ever read the essay by Rev. Joseph Tauer called "Call Me Chicken" ? Ever since I saw the dramatization of that essay on a PBS special I have loved chickens. Here's a link to it if you want to read it.
