HELP!!!

My grandmother is going to Austrailia for a month or thereabouts (and I SO want to go with her - but I don't want to leave Todd and 2 kids alone in the house for a month - that would be enough to make me mental upon my return!)

My question is - what is a good "made in Austrailia yarn" for sweaters, scarves, etc. She has asked for a shopping list - so I need details if you can provide them (name of yarn, weight, approx. # of skiens to make a sweater). We are thinking we (Mom & I) will give her a detailed shopping list and have her bring stuff home.

Is there any "made in Austrailia" fabric that I need to ask for?

She is 80 some years old, tires me out when we go shopping, and they are going on a tour of a yarn factory somewhere........

If I was to ask for an Austrailian souvenier, what is a good item to ask for (if I don't ask for specifics, I'll end up with a tshirt or baseball hat for myself)? I'm not sure which parts of Austrailia she is touring ..... (Sydney and New Zealand are two cities that were mentioned). I'll try and find out some more details here shortly!

Thanks a million for all your help!
Kris

PS - it is also my Dad's birthday today - stop over at my Mom's blog and wish him a happy birthday!!!

Your Grandmother sounds like quite a character - I am sure she will love her trip down under! I am not a knitter so can't help you will the yarn query. In regards to fabric, Prints Charming are fabric designers who make great fabric. I will email you the link. Perhaps you could ask her to bring you back some quilting magazines? Homespun and Quilters Companion are both good ones and are widely available.

Go to Little Jenny Wren's blog and ask her I know she would reply.

also ourredhouse.blogspot.com

Both are aussie blogs and both are crafty. Hope it helps

What an adventure, are you sure you can't leave the family for a month? A long time to be gone, I know, but wow, how great would that be?
Blessings,
Niki

PS I couldn't leave my family either.... :)

Wow..thats a question and a half!! Everything seems to be sourced from China!!! I agree with the homespun magazine thing though. New zealand is a country quite separate from Australia!! Sometimes we get ships berthig here in Hawkes Bay..you should find out what ports they are stopping by. She sounds a treat..just the sort of person I want to be at eighty!!

That would be a fun trip to go to Australia. I did a country report on Australia in the sixth grade and since then I have always wanted to go visit.
THe only thing I can think of that comes from Australia is a boomerang. That is what I would ask for. I am no help to you there. Thanks for your kind comment on my blog. One day it would be fun to meet all these ladies we visit with through blogland or I like to call it the blog world.
Have a good evening!

I'm of no help with the yarn, fabric or suveneirs, never been to Australia (would love to go though). God love your grandmother I can only hope and pray that we're that energetic, if and when we reach those golden years.

Hi Kris,
Whereabouts in Australia will she be visiting? Not sure about Sydney area but can give advice on Victoria and Queensland.
Would be good if you could go, I'm sure you would enjoy it.
Kind regards from Liz

Kris,

Your grandmother astounds me. I so want just a snippet of her youth and energy! I'm glad she is taking this trip, enjoying herself, day in and out. It's the true gift of life!

No doubt she'll bring you all the yummy goodies she can "stash" in her luggage. And I know you'll get lots of suggestions from this grand world that is blogland.

Joy and exhilaration this day!

My US friends just loved Tim Tam's when I visited with them. They're Australian chocolate coated cookies, and you can get them at any grocery store. They definitely weren't into vegemite. I think you have to be brought up on that stuff. If she's near Bendigo in Victoria, definitely make a stop at the Bendigo Woolen Mills. They have lovely Aussie woolen yarn at great prices. They mail order too, I'm not sure if they're on the www.
Hope this helps
*hugs*
